Repair Your Own Credit

by George Burns

When watching television, listening to the radio, reading the newspaper or browsing the internet you are likely to see many ads that claim they can fix your bad credit. Some of these companies are fraudulent. It is possible for you to begin to repair your own credit history. Here are some tips to help you.

Step One: In writing, inform the consumer report agency about the items considered to be inaccurate. Enclose copies of the original paperwork that supports your claims. You should also include your full name, address and state clearly the items that are in dispute and why.

At this point, you sincerely request that these items be removed. It is recommended that this letter be sent by certified mail.

Consumer reporting agencies have to consider and report the disputed items in 30 days or so. Then the information contributor will examine and evaluate this information and finally reports back to the consumer company.

Next, the company has to provide the client with the results combined with the name, the contact number and the address of the information provider. If any of the disputed items are to be changed or deleted, the company cannot place the questioned information into the credit file again. The information provider has to confirm it to be both accurate and comprehensive.

Step Two- There will be times that the company has determined that the disputed information is both accurate and timely. If you still feel differently, this is the time to turn to the source of the problem, the creditor. Send the proper documentation to the creditor concerning the disputed items.

Remember to include photocopies of all the original documents. The majority of providers will have a specific address for disputes. When the provider reports an item to a consumer reporting agency, it has to include a notice of your dispute.

1- The influence that credit reports have on getting insurance or a loan.

2- For making sure that the information is correct and advanced before applying for loans to buy a house, car, even applying for jobs and insurance.

3- To prevent identity theft. Identity thieves will use your information to commit fraud. It is important to be careful with your credit information.

Inaccurate reports could also affect one’s ability in getting insurance, credit or even jobs.

This has been the basics of repairing your credit. Be patient because the credit agencies can be uncooperative at times. Don’t worry about it, just be careful and take your time. Educate yourself and you can handle the credit problems on your own.
